Applying Minimalism in the Real World: Results From a Workshop
2020
Minimalism is a user-centered, contextual and goal-oriented approach to technical communication originally developed by John M. Carroll (1990). In minimalism, the aim is to produce user documentation that focuses on the user’s needs, helps the user recover from error situations, and strengthens the user’s skills in working with the system (Carroll & van der Meij 1995: 245). The challenge with minimalism has been its practical application: although user-centeredness – the core of minimalism – is the key issue in technical communication, the abstract nature of the approach and its focus on software documentation has made it difficult to apply in industry settings (Virtaluoto, Suojanen & Isohe…
Application of computational fluid dynamics technique in electrodialysis/reverse electrodialysis processes
2022
This Chapter treats the application of CFD technique in ED/RED processes. CFD simulations are able to predict flow and mass transfer in channels filled with spacers or membrane profiles, by providing dimensionless correlations useful for process models. At a larger scale, manifolds of the stack and inlet/ outlet zones of the channel can be simulated. Numerical models can include the computation of the electrical potential, thus characterizing the process performance. Direct numerical simulations can elucidate the complex phenomenology of overlimiting transport and of chaotic electrokinetic flows.
Need for closure moderates the break in the message effect
2016
Abstract Cutting the message into smaller portions is a common practice in the media. Typically such messages consist of a headline followed by a story elaboration. In a series of studies Dolinski and Kofta (2001) have shown that such a break in the message increases the effect of the information provided in the headline over that of a story which actually contained information inconsistent with that headline. A possible explanation of this effect, based on the concept of the need for cognitive closure, is presented in the article. The experiment shows the break-in-the-message effect is found mainly for participants with high need for closure but not for those with low such need.

Mass measurements of As, Se, and Br nuclei, and their implication on the proton-neutron interaction strength toward the N=Z line
2021
Mass measurements of the $^{69}$As, $^{70,71}$Se and $^{71}$Br isotopes, produced via fragmentation of a $^{124}$Xe primary beam at the FRS at GSI, have been performed with the multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) of the FRS Ion Catcher with an unprecedented mass resolving power of almost 1,000,000. For the $^{69}$As isotope, this is the first direct mass measurement. A mass uncertainty of 22 keV was achieved with only 10 events. For the $^{70}$Se isotope, a mass uncertainty of 2.6 keV was obtained, corresponding to a relative accuracy of $\delta$m/m = 4.0$\times 10^{-8}$, with less than 500 events. The masses of the $^{71}$Se and $^{71}$Br isotopes were measured…
Mass measurements of neutron-deficient nuclei and their implications for astrophysics
2012
During the years 2005-2010 the double-Penning-trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP has been used to measure the masses of 90 ground and 8 isomeric states of neutron-deficient nuclides with a typical precision of better than 10keV. The masses of 14 nuclides -- 84Zr , 88, 89Tc , 90-92Ru , 92-94Rh , 94, 95Pd , 106, 108, 110Sb -- have been experimentally determined for the first time. This article gives an overview on these measurements and their impact on the modeling of the astrophysical rp -process. peerReviewed
TeamLab : au-delà de quelles limites ? Le numérique à la portée des publics
2019
Peut-on encore parler d’exposition ? This text intends to study the « TeamLab : beyond the limits » exhibition which took place at the Halle de la Villette in Paris from 15 May to 9 Septemb…
Mass media - szansa czy zagrożenie
2019
Editorial: New Forms of Media Work and Its Organizational and Institutional Conditions
2022
This thematic issue explores the widening scope of media work and the institutional and organizational conditions that support new forms of media work. The media industry has undergone significant economic, structural, and technological changes during the past few decades, including changing patterns of ownership and digitalization of media production, distribution, and consumption. Simultaneously, practices of media work are adopted also in other industries. The 10 articles in the issue not only focus on the new professional roles and responsibilities emerging in the news media industry but also study the practices of media work in organizations in other fields, such as the music industry …
